How to choose a good website/domain name
Registering a domain name is the first step toward creating your online presence. Whether you’re launching a website for your business, organization, or personal interest you need to choose a domain name (web address or URL) that best suits your purpose.
There is so much riding on your domain name, including your credibility, search engine ranking, and overall success on the web. Rather than rushing to register the first name that comes to mind, consider the following and start off on the right foot with a good domain name.
Sensibility
Your domain name should make sense to your target audience. Ask yourself what domain name would make the most sense to you if you were a potential customer. For example, if your business specializes in corporate training, a sensible domain name would be www.businessname-corporate-training.com.
Memorability
Good domain names are easy to remember. Take a minute and think about some of the most memorable domain names you know and what makes them memorable. With a memorable domain name customers will be able to easily find and promote your website.
Keywords
Keywords are very important to search engines so including them in your domain name is key. Your most relevant keywords should appear first for the best search engine ranking
Length
Short domains are easier for search engines to rank and more memorable so limit your domain to three or four short words or approx. 55 characters.
Originality
If your desired domain name is already taken, consider using hyphens, plural forms, numbers, letters, or supporting words like “online” or “pro” keeping in mind that it should still make sense
Extension
By default, we use the .com extension when searching online. If you can get the .com for your website, then get it. Otherwise, you can consider a .net, .biz, .org, or a country level extension (but only if you cater to that specific country).
Variations
Registering variations of your primary domain name is a good way to protect your brand online and improve your search engine ranking. Try registering domain names for your specific products or services and point them to your website
